CHICK COREA - MOZART GOES JAZZ

2006 saw Austria celebrate the 250th anniversary of the birth of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Fritz Thom felt the need for fresh artistic approaches to the works of Mozart and knew about the deep relationship of Chick Corea to this composer. Fritz convinced Peter Marboe, the artistic director of the Vienna Mozart Year, to specially commission an original piece from Chick Corea for this occasion.

A pioneer of jazz fusion
Chick Corea was born near Boston, Massachusetts, and was introduced to jazz by his father, a trumpeter in Dixieland bands. He began his professional career in New York in the early 1960s as a member of bands led by Blue Mitchell and Herbie Mann. In 1968, he replaced Herbie Hancock as the pianist in Miles Davis’s band.

Corea became a band leader in his own right in the 1970s with groups such as Return to Forever, Origin, and the Akoustic Band. It was during this time that he also burnished his reputation for his avant-garde approach to music which also made him a pioneer of jazz fusion.

A special composition for Mozart
For the 250th anniversary of Mozart’s birth Chick Corea wrote a special composition, his Piano Concerto #2. During Vienna Jazz Festival he performed it for the first time on the stage of the Vienna State Opera. The artistic context of the Vienna Jazz Festival as well as the special location of the Vienna State Opera served as catalysts for the innovative potential of this artistic creation.
