2006 saw Austria celebrate
the 250th anniversary of the birth of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
Fritz Thom felt the need for fresh artistic approaches to the
works of Mozart and knew about the deep relationship of Chick
Corea to this composer. Fritz convinced Peter Marboe, the artistic
director of the Vienna Mozart Year, to specially commission an
original piece from Chick Corea for this occasion.
A pioneer of jazz fusion
Chick Corea was born near Boston, Massachusetts, and was introduced
to jazz by his father, a trumpeter in Dixieland bands. He began
his professional career in New York in the early 1960s as a member
of bands led by Blue Mitchell and Herbie Mann. In 1968, he replaced
Herbie Hancock as the pianist in Miles Davis’s band.
